Have tried many times unsuccessfully to install x86freGRMRSATMSU. Installer just hangs and eventually says the following item(s) was not installed: KB958830. Have searched for solution and tried the following: -Running 'system scan' from the command prompt (no errors reported) -Running System Update readiness which finds 4 errors (all related to this install) - unavailable repair files for 2.mum and 2.cat files the install placed in servicing packages After this last, thought I would 'remove' those files and try the download again using a different installer but I can't figure out how to do this in W7 as it keeps telling me I need system permission to move the files even though I am an administrator on the machine. There is no way to 'uninstall' the package as it is not listed in installed updates since it was never really installed.
Event Log error: Windows update 'Update for Windows (KB958830)' could not be installed because of error 'No signature was present in the subject.' (Command line: 'C: Windows system32 wusa.exe' 'C: Users ann d lutter Desktop x86freGRMRSATMSU.msu' ') I am working on a VM session but don't understand why that would be a problem? I would like to be able to work with the 'new and improved' group policy options that are not available in the XP utility and also to begin to learn W7. Can anyone help?

Windows Version = 7 Professional (Version 6.1 build 7600) I have run the package analysis command and uploaded the results and the System Readiness logs as requested: I'm not sure what I am supposed to see here, but to my untrained eye, I believe it is telling me that the package is corrupt (I have downloaded it 3 times from 2 different places with the same result) and that it put some corrupt files in the%systemroot% servicing packages folder that it cannot repair. Since the package does not appear to be installed I am at a loss to know how to fix this. My original thought was to 'remove' those corrupt files and try to reinstall with the newly downloaded version of the package. However, that is when I ran into the issue where I could not move the files without permission from the system? This is another issue I will need an answer to!!!!! Hopefully there is a simple solution I am not seeing (other than being an administrator and turning off UAC), otherwise, I am not at all sure about supporting Windows 7.
In the past, I have needed access to move/delete/replace system files in order to support. (I do not even get a prompt to enter elevated permissions with or without UAC turned on). Thanks for any insights/suggestions!!!!!

Judy, Thank you so much for your help. I followed all of your steps. I wasn't able to activate from the command line using your command, but I am now able to see Windows components in features and programs and was able to activate it from there. I am hoping that this whole thing is due to a flaky installation of Windows7 on a VMWare installation and that permissions would not normally provide that much trouble when doing support? In any event, I never would have gotten here on my own, so thank again!!!!!
Hello, I'm trying to install the RSAT also now, and I get the same error: Windows update 'Update for Windows (KB958830)' could not be installed because of error Log Name: Setup Source: Microsoft-Windows-WUSA Date: 5-4-2010 22:30:42 Event ID: 3 Task Category: None Level: Error Keywords: User: PC Username Computer: Username Description: Windows update 'Update for Windows (KB958830)' could not be installed because of error 'The data is invalid.' (Command line: 'C: Windows system32 wusa.exe' 'C: Users User Downloads amd64freGRMRSATXMSU.msu') I have a 64 bit computer of Windows 7 Ultimate.
Anyone any idea how to fix this?I tried to do the steps from in this topic, but was not able to find Microsoft-Windows-RemoteServerAdministrationTools-Package31bf3856ad364e35x866.1.7600.16385 in my registry. Certifications: MCSA 2003 MCSE 2003 MCTS. Hello, Has anyone figured this out yet?? There have been so many forums with a similar post, but I have found no answers. Judy Collins had some decent ideas above, but I can't get past trying to install the.msu to try to enable it in Windows Features.
I can't even get it to show up in the registry. I'm running Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise Version 6.1.7600 When I run the x86freGRMRSATMSU.msu that I got from, the update acts like it is going to do something then all of a sudden it fails and gives me the message 'Some updates were not installed: (KB958830)' etc. I've tried running it in the command prompt window as an admin, logging in as different admins (local and network) to my machine to use different, cleaner profiles, moving my pc in AD to an OU that does not receive any policies (and back again), downloading the msu again and trying again.but all with same exact results. I get a similar error: From Setup Event Log: Windows update 'Update for Windows (KB958830)' could not be installed because of error 'Catastrophic failure' (Command line: 'C: Windows system32 wusa.exe' 'C: Users Admin Desktop x86freGRMRSATMSU.msu' ') From System Event Log: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8000ffff: Update for Windows (KB958830). Thank you Nexxus6 - this also resolved my issue. Since Windows Update always remains started, the only thing I had to start was Windows Installer. So, here we are near mid-year 2015 (TWENTY-FIFTEEN) and this STILL is a 'Microsoft BUG!'
I say that, because is should be simple enough for the '.msu' and/or the underlying infrastructure to check and, if 'Windows Installer' is not started, just say, 'Hey, Windows Installer is not started - it must be started, in order to apply this feature - would you like for me to start this service now, and re-try the installation of the feature?' I mean, seriously, wouldn't that be quite practical? Actually, I think the '.msu' process (or 'msiexec,' whichever is handling the whole install procedure) should just 'start the Windows installer service' - or at least attempt to start it. That service is, after all, set to 'manual' by design. Oh, the wonders of buggy procedures.:) tnjman.
