Duke Nukem 3D marked a major shift in the gameplay of the years, moving from a 2D platform action genre found in the first two games to a 3D first-person shooter. Duke Nukem 3D, along with first-person shooters such as and Wolfenstein 3D, represents the dawn of the first person shooter genre and are considered classics today.​ In addition to being immensely popular with gamers, Duke Nukem 3D was critically acclaimed as well for its level design, gameplay, and graphics. Set in the early 21st century, players assume the role of Duke Nukem as they try to fight back an alien invasion. The game consists of a number of levels featuring indoor and outdoor environments that can be completed in a non-linear format. Players guide Duke Nukem through these environments fighting alien enemies as they try to achieve various objectives.
