There are also quite a few OBD threads on the forum, so you could try looking their first.:-) There are some basic things you need to know: Petrol cars from 2001 and Diesel cars from 2004 Should have the 16-pin connectors and you should be able to find something that will connect and work. Cars before those dates are likely to have systems that are specific to the manufacturer and be rare and expensive. After that the really cheap systems will plug in and give you a which you will have to look up in a book (and after that look it up on google) to make sense of it. More expensive systems have this information built in and negate the need for the book (though probably not google). The really expensive systems will repair the car after diagnosis - they are called garages. There are that provide a breakdown of what vehicles are known to support which.

Hopefully this is useful info. Ttfn Thanks for that; I realise there are a number of threads, but from the many I have perused, they seem to be vehicle biased, and I would rather buy a slightly more expensive tool that is useful for more than the one vehicle.

Similarly, I would like to have parameter monitoring, and so wonder how cheaply I can get that sort of capability. And I appreciate that these are very much vehicle dependant; my 2001 diesel Laguna should not support OBD2, yet the link you gave shows that the 2002 diesel Laguna is checked out OK, hence the possibility that people may have tried a more expensive bit of kit and found enhanced (unexpected and undocumented) capabilities. Similarly, I have bought a cheap OBD2 code reader, which appears to do all it should, but did not read a code when I had a warning light lit. It may be quite capable, but not appropriate for this vehicle. I do like your characterisation of the different systems; unfortunately, even the most expensive category does not guarantee they will get the right solution, so I would rather spend my time diagnosing, and get the garage to do the work. (I do what I do best, and they do what they do best) And the Clip software seems to be the best for Renaults, yet the Clip OBD adapter is quite expensive (compared to the ELM327, which I already have) so want to know if people have successfully used it. So thanks for the links that report what should work, and what capabilities are meant to be in place; I'd quite like this thread to expand that (as only a forum like this can do) to show the undocumented high- and low-spots of the tools.

Have you come across these people: In particular the PC software - they were very helpful in going through my options, so it might be worthwhile sending them an email. Ttfn I see you have a 2002 petrol scenic, so are in the expected era for OBD2. Does this mean that, along with the PC based system, that you have parameter monitoring, as well as the basic fault code reading?

And what of parameter changing, that the Renault Clip is meant to support? Such as enabling or disabling functions within the controllers?
